Women4Oceans hosted its first networking event in Asia. The event brought together Japan-based women with an interest in the ocean. Following the success of our first ever event in London we followed a similar structure for the evening.

Whilst the evening was guided by a panel of speakers, it sought to be inclusive by giving everybody the chance to speak. Time  was allotted for mini-presentations of up to two minutes and the opportunity of doing short interviews-to-camera in the networking breaks. Many thanks to Akiko Nakajima for providing interpretation between Japanese - English and English - Japanese. .

The purpose of the evening was to build a network of women working on ocean issues in Japan. Speakers had the opportunity to tell their story of how they got to where they are now, provide an overview of their work, discuss some of the challenges they faced or still face working as women in their fields and how they overcome these challenges. Women 4 Oceans は、2017年3月にロンドンで開かれた初イベントに続き、5月30日火曜日にアジア初のネットワーキングイベントを東京六本木で開催します。
 
4人のスピーカーがイベントを担当しますが、参加者の皆様にも話してもらいたいので、最大2分間のプレゼンテーションやカメラの前でインタービューされる機会を皆様に設ける予定です。当日は、日英英日通訳もつきます。
 
イベントの狙いは、日本で海関連の仕事をしている女性のネットワークをつくることです。参加者は、どんなきっかけで海関連の仕事をするようになったかを説明するとともに、仕事や活動内容をシェアし、女性としてどういうチャレンジに直面しているのか、またどうやってそのチャレンジを乗りこえたか等話すことができます。

スピーカーの紹介

​Sachiko Okada  is an oceans campaigner with Greenpeace in Japan. Sachiko worked as a field ecologist in a Landscape Ecology Research team at the Australian National University for 8 years after the completion of her degree of Environmental Science with the University of Newcastle, Australia in 2006. A peer-reviewed scientific paper of her own study on the breeding success of birds in woodland remnants in a transforming landscape, has just been published. In Australia, she mainly did conservation work for terrestrial animals. Since Sachiko started her position as an Oceans Campaigner at Greenpeace Japan in 2016, she has been working on overfishing issues. These include activities to protect endangered species, such as the Pacific Bluefin Tuna, and to widely spread a concept of sustainable seafood that are certainly secured for the sustainability and social responsibility in Japan.

オーストラリア、ニューカッスル大学で環境科学（環境管理）学士号を取得後、オーストラリア国立大学の景観生態学研究チームでフィールド・エコロジストとして8年間勤務。修士号の一環で「生息地周辺の農業利用地の植林地への変更が野鳥の繁殖に与える影響について」ジャーナル・ランドスケープエコロジーに論文を発表。オーストラリアでは、主に陸上生物の多様性保全のために活動。
 
2016年に帰国後、グリーンピース・ジャパンの海洋生態系問題のキャンペーナーとして、過剰漁業をテーマとし、太平洋クロマグロなど絶滅危惧種の保全ほか、持続可能な漁獲方法や社会的責任が担保されたサステナブル・シーフードを広く一般に認知・普及させるための活動を行っている。
Bonnie Waycott Bonnie Waycott was born in the UK and lived in Japan for 5 years as a child.  She became interested in the sea after her father taught her how to snorkel off Sado Island on the Sea of Japan, close to her mother's hometown. Today she's a freelance writer who specialises in Japan's oceans and aquaculture industry.  Travelling frequently between the UK and Japan, Bonnie acts as a bridge between both, sharing marine and aquaculture-related information. 
 
Bonnie received her Dive Master certification in 2015.  Her photos are all taken in Japan and aim to highlight the beauty and diversity of an underwater environment that is still relatively unknown.

​ボニー　ウェイコット

ボニー　ウェイコットは、イギリス生まれで、子供の頃5年間日本で育ちました。母の出身地新潟県近くの佐渡ヶ島で父にシュノーケリングを教えてもらった結果、海に興味を持つようになりました。現在は、日本のダイビングや魚の養殖が専門のフリーランスライターとして活躍しており、イギリスと日本を行き来しながら両方の国の橋となって、海洋関連情報をシェアしています。
2015年にダイブマスターの資格をとり、水中写真にも興味があります。写真を通して、海外ではまだあまり知られていない日本の海の魅力をアピールするのも狙いです。

Mareike Dornhege graduated from the University of Oxford with an MSc and has since then participated in and lead field research projects all over the world. She started researching the biodiversity of coral reefs in Honduras and noticing the complete absence of sharks here, she started to investigate what happened to the majestic apex predators of the ocean. This led her straight to shark fisheries, as overfishing is the biggest thread to sharks, among other marine life. She was the first grant recipient of the prestigious Save Our Seas Foundation to start a project in Japan were she investigated the top ten largest shark fishery in the world for her PhD. Currently she is leading the Okinawa chapter for a global assessment of shark and ray biodiversity on coral reefs worldwide and she just joined another global initiative measuring the public perception of sharks throughout the world.
 
Mareike has been a passionate scuba diver since the age of 14 and has dived on all 5 continents.  She loves working not only with, but right in the ocean to assess the status of sharks, create awareness and contribute to public outreach. In her talk she will share knowledge of how to set up your own or join existing field research projects, convince funders and how to advocate and use field research to reach people and bring sharks and the ocean closer to their hearts.

マライケドンヘゲは、イギリスのオックスフォード大学で科学修士をとって卒業し、世界中で実地調査を設立し、関わってきました。仕事の主な内容は珊瑚礁の保全やサメの保護です。海洋研究者とはどういう仕事なのか知りたい方は、声をかけてください！

Yukari Goto. Deputy Editor of Marine Diving Magazine. Yukari became interested in the oceans while windsurfing at university, and began diving after starting work at Marine Art Center Co., Ltd. As a member of the editorial staff of Marine Diving (Japan's main scuba diving magazine) and a travel magazine belonging to an affiliated company, she reports on scuba diving areas and resorts in Japan and around the world. Originally from Tokyo, she is currently the deputy editor of monthly magazine Marine Diving.

『マリンダイビング』や姉妹誌の旅行雑誌の編集スタッフとして、海外、国内のダイビングエリアやリゾートを取材。月刊『マリンダイビング』副編集長。東京都出身。
